Single-stream recycling is a system in which all recyclables, including newspaper, cardboard, plastic, aluminum, junk mail, etc., are placed in a single bin or cart for recycling. These recyclables are collected by a single truck and taken to a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) to be sorted into various commodity streams for sale to markets, where it is processed into feedstock which can be used in the manufacture of new products.

To estimate the environmental value for curbside recycling and composting in King County, Sound Resource Management developed a comprehensive recycling and composting environmental costs and benefits valuation model. This model estimates pollution reductions across all three phases of product life cycles that are caused by diverting material discards to recycling or compositing. The model takes into account pollution emissions from collection vehicles, recyclables processing facilities, composting facilities, disposal facilities, and shipping of processed materials to end users.

Hernani is a city in Spain. As in other cities of Spain, Hernani’s former municipal waste management system strongly relied on waste disposal complemented with a limited recycling system. In 2002, the provincial government presented a controversial plan containing two central components: the addition of another container for the voluntary recycling of organic materials and the construction of two new incinerators. Citizen opposition to the latter was immediate. After years of struggle and mobilization, the people successfully stopped an incinerator from being built in Txingudi.
